What is Stress?

The first thing to be aware of is that stress and anxiety are different things. Stress is a strong demand placed on either our mind or our body. Stress is when we have ten things to do and only time to complete six. It can be an illness to ourselves our someone close that we care about or financial worries. Stress is very real and normally when the stressful period has passed we recover quite quickly. Stress, in fact, helps us overcome challenges in our lives.

Excessive stress, however, results in insomnia, poor concentration, and an impaired ability to do the things you normally do. If we’re not careful stress can become anxiety. Anxiety, on the other hand, is about imagined negative outcomes. Someone loses their job and can’t pay their mortgage or feed the family, that’s stress. I don’t think the boss likes me, I’m going to lose my job and not be able to pay the mortgage or feed the family, that’s anxiety.

Life is stressful and we all react differently to it, its negative effects, however, can be managed by practising a few established techniques. “Things are not as they are, they’re how we think they are!”.
